kangemi-resource-detailThe Kangemi Resource Centre was started in 2002 by Alix D'Ansembourg to support non-formal schools by providing training for the teachers. Alix started the KRC under the umbrella of the NGO, Orphelins sans Frontieres East Africa.

She was very well supported by many kind donors including Trocaire, Generation Europe Fund, World Food Programme, Philippson Foundation, Benina Foundation and the French Embassy (Social Funds for Development). The Order of Malta is now working closely with Alix to support the KRC and we hope that this relationship will develop further.

Regular training sessions for teachers at non-formal schools are organised at the centre on a regular basis. This has a direct impact on the educational standards of children.

Non-formal schools are community-based primary schools not registered with the Kenyan government. To shed some light on primary education in Kenya, if one were to attend a Government school the classroom would be filled with over 80 children all vying for the teacher’s attention and resources stretched to capacity.

In lieu of this, local communities have taken it upon themselves to provide alternative primary education, however the teachers often lack formal training and basic resources such as books, pens and paper, power connection and access to water and sanitation.
