huruma-village-kenya2We are delighted to have received a very generous donation from the Foreign Aid Service of the British Association of The Sovereign Military Order of Malta for the purchase of a Meckow Aquapur Unit.
The unit will be installed at Huruma Village on the edge of the Karura Forest in Nairobi. This is a community of approximately 800 families totalling 5000+ people.

Currently the community walks over 1km into the forest to access the City Council water supply. However, in spring 2010 a large fence will be erected around the forest cutting the community off from their only source of relatively clean water.

There is a large river on the village side of the fence, but the water is filthy dirty and has been found to contain e-Coli. However, it is a sufficient source to power the Meckow Aquapur unit.

The Meckow Aquapur was initially developed for poor communities in India, where there was a sufficient supply of water (river, dam, lake), but the water quality was not safe for human consumption.  The benefit of this unit is that it does not require any electricity, but is powered by water force alone. It can produce up to 1000 litres of safe, clean drinking water per hour.

We are very pleased to be working with both the British High Commission and UN HABITAT on this project to provide clean, safe water for this community. A total of 3 units are required for a community of this size and the Order of Malta will be supplying one.

We will add photos of the installation in due course.
